Have a look at the heel of the Italian
boot. This southern part of the region Apulia is called Salento, it
corresponds with the province of Lecce. The project InItinere is
established by the municipality of Casarano, a town located inside
the triangle of Gallipoli, Otranto and S.M. di Leuca. The sites of
the project, its artworks and itineraries are to be found inside,
outside and along this triangle.

motivation of the project
Salento is a place culturally characterized by the presence of Palaeolithic
sites, the signs of Greek colonization, rock churches and Baroque centres.
Moreover, because of its geographical position, Salento is land of migration
waves, limited by borders, but at the same time crossed by signs coming
from different horizons.
In briefly presenting this project we should consider that the enormous
expansion of worldwide communication has produced swift changes in our way
of life, transforming the traditional culture everywhere. Development and
innovation processes act as powerful factors of globalisation, reducing
the cultural differences that were very strongly felt in the past. Paradoxically
enough, though, globalisation does reaffirm peripherical cultures, so, unlike
the past, there are no more central places of culture and art production.
In the light of this, in our attempt to draw a place of art in Salento,
without neglecting its geographical position, we should consider this place
as a border land, as FINIS TERRAE. That is, a sort of mid-land,
an open contact, exchange and experience sharing place. A place where imaginative
and creative ideas could become a reality.

goals of the project
The main goal of this project is to relate local and a global cultural dimensions,
setting up the conditions for a fruitful dialogue among those artistic expressions
that try to link multimedia works with places of the traditional culture.
By this confrontation we are willing to take the local landscape and environment
into better account and to put our land in relation with other cultures.
approach of the project
For the realization of the project two exhibitions are planned: Poly-Morphosis and Acqua&Sale.
In different ways these activities should be able to foster a lively cultural
dialogue with the local inhabitants.
Our idea is to set the artists works not in traditional art places
such as museums or galleries, but IN SITU, in that natural scenery in the
heart of Mediterranean. Opening up to the different languages of the international
art culture, Salento could become a diffused museum. |

Acqua&Sale - joung artits' exhibition
The exhibition called Acqua&Sale is inspired both by the
sea which is a characteristic feature of this land, and by the name
of an old and simple dish of the local peasant culture: the sea-water
that permanently moulds the land and is the flowing element mingling
ingredients and cultures, and the salt, representing the intelligence
and wisdom that generate new realities.
This exhibition will take place in symbolic historical places where Italian
and foreign artists from the partner states will meet and work.
Poly-Morphosis - public space exhibition
By Poly-Morphosis we would like to propose a series of exhibitions
offering the vision of a time past associated with the history and
features of local landscape: stone, water, light, all put in relation
with the works of contemporary art.
Exhibitions by international artists are planned, that, placed in different
sites, should foster the dialogue among art, built environment, territory
and landscape.
